What is Forensic entomology?
Forensic entomology is a part of entomology which implies the application and study of the insects and other arthropod animals to criminal matters. As a general rule, forensic entomology is associated with the investigations of death. This area if entomology is in particular helpful in determining the time of infliction of the wounds. Forensic entomology is divided into three subareas, including urban, medico-legal and stored-product entomology. The concept behind forensic entomology dates since the 14th century, although its systematical use in criminal investigation has only been present for about 30 years. Nevertheless, this branch of entomology has been commonly featured in popular TV shows such as CSI and Bones. In both these shows, there is a member of the forensic team who is specialized in entomology and are able to identify the significance of different types of bugs at the crime scene and which may indicate different hints on the cause of death.
