Famous entomologists
The scientific study of insects did not begin a long time ago, but there are several names that are worth to be mentioned in the history of entomology. Here one can read more about the men that made a difference in entomology and whose work has always remained known by those who have or will ever be interested in studying insects.
Karl Ritter von Frisch was a very famous Austrian entomologist who lived throughout two centuries, as he was born in the end of the 19th century, in 1886 and lived until the end of the 20th century, dying in 1982. He received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1973 after observing the honey bee and translating the waggle dance. He had worked with Nikolaas Tinbergen and Konrad Lorenz and they have centered their work on observing and investigating the sensory perceptions of the honey bee. Von Frisch was one of the first in his branch to translate the waggle dance, a theory that has been recently proven to be valid and accurate, although at the time had been received by a strong criticism and skepticism.
Also, E.O. Wilson, or Edward Osborne Wilson is another very famous biologist, of American origins and who was born in 1929. E.O. Wilson is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction, which he had been awarded for two times. He is a widely renowned biologist, researcher in the area of sociobiology and biodiversity, theorist, naturalist and author. When it comes to the study of insects, he specialized in the study of ants, namely myrmecology. He is in particular known for his scientific career and he is often referred to as the ‘father of sociobiology’. He is also quite popular thanks to his environmental advocacy and deist ideas. Nevertheless, he is the Humanist Laureate of the International Academy of Humanism.
